Ricardo Toscano (Lisbon, 1993) is a saxophonist and composer who began his musical journey with the clarinet at age eight. He switched to alto sax at sixteen and soon formed a jazz quartet that won the Young Musicians Award in Portugal. His debut album (2018, Clean Feed) showcased a mature sound influenced by John Coltrane and modal jazz, blending mainstream, ballads, and avant-garde elements. In 2022, he released „Chasing Contradictions“, a trio album inspired by Sonny Rollins' late '50s work, praised for its freedom and dynamic interplay. Hailed as Jazz Album of the Year in Portugal, it reflects a fusion of jazz tradition and modern Portuguese avant-garde. Toscano also teaches at jazz and arts institutions in Lisbon.
