Chicago-born trumpeter Marquis Hill (1987) has built an international career by breaking down the boundaries between jazz and other forms of African American music, from hip-hop, R&B and Chicago house to neo-soul. His playing combines a deeply personal sound with a strong sense of jazz history, drawing on the legacies of Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and Donald Byrd while remaining firmly contemporary. Hill studied music education at Northern Illinois University and jazz pedagogy at DePaul University. His early recognition included wins in the International Trumpet Guild and Carmine Caruso competitions, followed by first place in the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz competition in 2014 and a DownBeat Critics Poll win in 2016. Since 2011, he has released around twenty albums as a leader or co-leader and collaborated with artists including Marcus Miller, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joe Lovano, Jeff Parker and Makaya McCraven.
