Portuguese pianist and composer João Paulo Esteves da Silva (Lisbon, 1961) moves between jazz, classical music, folk, fado, free improvisation and rock. After studying classical piano and living in France, he returned to Portugal in 1992, making jazz and spontaneous composition his primary creative languages. Known for an exceptionally personal approach to improvisation, he combines technical mastery with lyricism and a deep sense of musical expression. Thirty years after his debut as a leader, “Serra sem Fim” (1995), one of the landmarks of contemporary Portuguese jazz, he presents “País Distante” (2025). Combining his compositions with collectively improvised pieces, the album moves between lyricism and adventure, offering a distinctive vision of contemporary European jazz. It ranked second in the 2025 critics’ poll of jazz.pt. Esteves da Silva previously performed at the Belgrade Jazz Festival in 2016 with Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos.
