Tenor saxophonist and composer James Brandon Lewis, born in Buffalo in 1983, grew up immersed in church music, shaping the spiritual core of his sound. Early collaborations with legends like Benny Golson, Wallace Roney, and John Legend marked his path. After his debut album „Moments“ (2010), he moved to New York and gained critical acclaim with „Divine Travels“ (2014), fusing gospel spirit with free jazz fire. His third album, „Days of Freeman“ (2015), explored hip-hop influences—just as he made his first appearance at the Belgrade Jazz Festival. Sensing his talent, the festival featured him as one of its visual icons that year. Today, with 16 albums and numerous accolades, Lewis is DownBeat’s 2024 Artist and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year, returning to Belgrade with the group behind his acclaimed „Transfiguration“ album.
