Sameer Gupta - drums

Brooklyn-based violinist of Indian origin Arun Ramamurthy explores the meeting point of South Indian Carnatic tradition and jazz, also drawing on North Indian Hindustani forms. His compositions reflect on migration, cultural connection and the wisdom carried across generations. His latest album, “New Moon” (2024), released by Greenleaf Music, features a four-movement suite commissioned by Chamber Music America through its New Jazz Works programme. Together with bassist Damon Banks and drummer Sameer Gupta, Ramamurthy creates a sound that balances traditional forms with spontaneous, expansive improvisation, opening new possibilities for cross-cultural musical dialogue. Banks has collaborated with artists including Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, George Benson and Caetano Veloso, while Gupta spent nearly two decades on the New York scene and co-founded the influential Brooklyn Raga Massive with Ramamurthy. The trio has performed at venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Jazz Gallery, Kennedy Center and Bimhuis.
