Alexandar Hawkins - piano
Alexander Hawkins (Oxford, 1981) is a British pianist, organist, and composer, recognized as one of the most active and inventive figures in contemporary jazz. His musical approach blends a deep interest in structure and composition with a love for spontaneity and open form. Inspired early by his father, a jazz-loving pianist and clarinetist, Hawkins began classical piano and organ training, making his jazz debut at 16. He chose not to pursue formal jazz education, finding it too rigid, and instead earned a PhD in criminology from Cambridge. His piano influences range from Art Tatum and Thelonious Monk to Cecil Taylor. Determined to develop his own voice, he avoided imitation. Since his 2007 debut with The Convergence Quartet, he’s led multiple ensembles and collaborated with notable artists like Nicole Mitchell, Louis Moholo-Moholo, and Wadada Leo Smith. He has released over 30 albums and won the 2016 Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Instrumentalist.
