DANIEL ERDMANN'S VELVET REVOLUTION (Germany / France / Great Britain)
Daniel Erdmann – tenor saxophone
Théo Ceccaldi –violin, viola
Jim Hart – vibraphone
Daniel Erdmann's Velvet Revolution trio brings together the heroes of contemporary European jazz, epitomizing the numerous virtues of the genre. Their music originates in conflict with reality, exploding with fantasy. It combines the poetic and witty, the picturesque and the abstract, the written down and the loose, fluid melodies and complex structures, the collective strength and the individual spirit of musicians in action.
German tenor saxophonist Daniel Erdmann founded the band in 2015. So far, they have released the albums A Short Moment of Zero G (2016), Won't Put No Flag Out (2019) and Message in a Bubble (2023), all under the Hungarian BMC Records label. While the debut features only Erdman's compositions, and the second album, apart from his themes, only the standard "Over the Rainbow", all three members sign three tracks each on the latest recording, showing that the band has developed into a real collective, sharing responsibility in the improvisation segment as well.
Erdmann first performed at the Belgrade Jazz Festival in 2012 with the collective Das Kapital and French violinist Théo Ceccaldi in 2019 with the sextet The Freaks. Both concerts were in the hall of the Americana, in a blasting mood fired up by the music of energetic bands. With experienced British vibraphonist Jim Hart in charge of harmonies and rhythm in Velvet Revolution, this trio is only seemingly calmer. In fact, in the spirit of the name after the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, "Velvet Revolution carries out its coup non-violently, opening the listener to new musical perspectives and a new sensibility, in the spirit of the modern age", as noted by critic Nikola Marković when they performed at the Pančevo Jazz Festival in 2017.
