Studnitzky X Magro
Studnitzky – piano, trumpet and electronics
Magro – drums
Studnitzky and Magro teamed up to create a unique musical product that will blend jazz, classical, electronica and R'n'B as diverse tributaries of their stylistic interests, an outstanding reflection of Berlin's live music scene's innovative aspirations.
Too edgy for pop, too emotional for jazz and too lavish for electronica, trumpeter, pianist and composer Sebastian Studnitzky shapes innovative and refreshing music that defies clear genre classification. He won the ECHO Jazz 2015 award for the best jazz player in Germany and the OPUS Klassik 2020 award for the album A Bernstein Story (with Sebastian Manz). He has recorded more than ten albums as the leader of various format line-ups and collaborated with prominent world artists and bands, including Dominic Miller, Wolfgang Hafner, Moritz Von Oswald, Nils Landgren Funk Unit, Jazzanova, Mezzoforte and Nightmares On Wax. He is a professor of jazz trumpet at the University of Dresden and at the Jazz Institute in Berlin and the founder and artistic director of the Berlin festival XJAZZ.
Drummer and producer Magro creates a peculiar fusion of acoustic jazz, hip-hop and R'n'B. The first album, Trippin (2021) won him the German Jazz Prize for the best debut release. On the second album II (2022), his band was joined in the studio by the Berlin R'n'B singer Leona Berlin (Magro is also the producer of her albums), the rapper MC Rapturous, as well as the New York pianist BIGYUKI. Among the artists he has collaborated with as a drummer or producer are Kenny Wesley, J. LaMotta, Jakob Manz, Wayne Snow, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Stimulus.
